After 3 months, the NIC T20 Cup Tournament has finally come to an end. Shree Cutchi Leva Patel Samaj and Coast Gymkhana were crowned joint champions of the annual NIC T20 Cup Cricket Tournament after heavy rains necessitated the match to be abandoned. The finals were held at the Coast Gymkhana on Sunday 7 May 2017 at the Coast Gymkhana. Mombasa Heat Cricket Club took the 3rd position and Mombasa Sports Club came in in position 4.
The tournament, which was played every Sunday commencing March 6 2017, saw a total of 8 teams participate. This is the Bank’s third year as the official sponsor of the tourney dubbed the NIC Cup T20 challenge.
Other teams which participated in the tournament were; Mombasa Simba Sports Club, Burhani Sports Club, Jaffery Sports Club and Pakistani Cricket Club. Last year Mombasa Sports Club were crowned champions of the tournament.
Speaking at Coast Gymkhana during the awards ceremony, NIC Bank’s Deputy Directory, Treasury said, “We congratulate the winners and appreciate all the teams that took part in the tournament. As NIC Bank, we are glad to see how this tournament has helped to harness the talent of the youth in the coast region. We are proud to have partnered with the Coast Cricket Association and Cricket Kenya to support the youth through sports.”
The tourney aims to tap into the youth’s talent to not only increase the Bank’s presence in Mombasa, but also uplift the community and have a great impact in the lives of individuals. NIC Bank has continued to increase its footprint in the counties by expanding its branch network and rolling out new products and services in answer of the high demand for innovative retail products in the market.
The annual tourney brings together the cricket community in Mombasa, both players and enthusiasts. It begun on March and will run until April 30th, excluding the Easter weekend.
“This year the tournament has been very competitive with each team putting its best foot forward. We hope to get more teams to participate in next year’s games. We appreciate all our partners that worked to ensure all run smoothly.” Cricket Chairperson Mr. Sanjay Patel said during the awards ceremony.
The bank’s sponsorship covered officiating fees, awards, advertising costs as well as the official tourney gala dinners.
The Bank has supported various youth initiatives which have provided great opportunities to young individuals. Earlier this year, it sponsored students from economically challenged backgrounds to pursue their secondary education through various partners namely, the Mpesa Foundation, Edumed Trust, Dr. Choksey Foundation and Palmhouse Foundation. The cricket tournament is one of the avenues with the youth is part of its broader efforts to improve the quality of sports in Kenya.
This is the third year the Bank is sponsoring the tournament.
