NIC Bank today presented the Coast Cricket Association and Mombasa Sports Club with Ksh1.4 million. The bank will now become official sponsor of this year’s edition of the Mombasa Cricket T20 challenge.
The tournament to be played at Mombasa Sports Club will be dubbed the NIC CUP following the sponsorship. The annual competition will bring together local cricket teams as well as professional players and cricket enthusiasts. The three months tournament will start in March.
“As a Bank we have initiated various programmes to support the youth in this country. Citizenship is a core focus for the bank, and we will continue to sponsor initiatives and events in the communities in which we operate in.” said NIC Bank Director Treasury Sankul Mandavia.
Mombasa Sports Club Chairman Retired Lt. Col M.N Gitongu said; “The NIC Cup will become a key sporting event in the annual cricket calendar, aiming to promote and encourage sports in Mombasa as well as providing a platform for young players to showcase their prowess in the sport.”
Coast Gymkhana, Cutchi Leva, Simba Union, Burhani, Jaffery and Memon are some of the teams which have confirmed participation along with the host, Mombasa Sports Club. A total of 25 matches are expected to be played with the final four to be played in the ‘Indian Premier League’ format of Eliminator, Qualifier 1, Qualifier 2 and the Final.
NIC Bank sponsorship will cover the branded uniforms, officiating fees, the awards, advertising costs as well as the official tournament gala dinner which will be held after the finals.
On his part, the Coast Cricket Association Chairman, Mr Sanjay Patel, said: “We are grateful to NIC Bank for sponsoring this tournament, as it brings together local cricket enthusiasts in the business community and gives them the opportunity to play competitive cricket.”
